"Sons of the Joestar House"

When I was asked to paint a character portrait for a friend's D&D campaign, I wanted to make sure I got the style down first, so I started testing out different methods to make the final product look like a Victorian-era portrait. I looked up a bunch of examples online to use as reference, noting the colors and values commonly used, how they painted lighting, hair, skin and clothing, as well as how I could make the piece look old and weathered.

For the subject, I decided to paint a character who actually lived through Victorian times- Jonathan Joestar (left) from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I thought it would also be interesting to see him portrayed more realistically, since the original series is so stylized. After finishing Jonathan's portrait, I felt I also had to make one for his adopted brother Dio (right), since he was such an integral character to Jonathan's story, the two of them sharing intertwined fates. The theme of fate being so prevalent in the series also gave me the idea to have the cracks in the canvas reflect the characters' respective endings.
